Within DST, there is no separate category for speed pedelecs. Nevertheless, these bicycles can be correctly identified. This article explains how this works in practice.
Why there is no separate category for speed pedelecs
When setting up the DST platform, we align with the daily practices of suppliers. In doing so, they—technically speaking—often make no distinction between e-bikes and speed pedelecs. Consequently, both types of bicycles are often supplied with the same or similar datasets. Because DST follows this practice, no separate category has been established for speed pedelecs. Instead, the bicycle type is derived from existing data fields.
How a speed pedelec is identified
Nevertheless, it is possible to determine within DST whether a bicycle is a speed pedelec.
This can be done based on a combination of three fields:
- Registration Required
This field indicates whether registration, such as a license plate, is mandatory. For speed pedelecs, this value is usually set to true. - Maximum Speed
This is a numerical field in which the maximum supported speed is recorded. The value is 25 or 45. The unit is km/h. A value of 45 indicates a speed pedelec. - Ebike Type
This field is based on a code list with the following values:
- NORMAL. Normal e-bike
- SPEED PEDELEC. Speed pedelec

Example
A bicycle with the following properties is interpreted as a speed pedelec within the DST platform:
- Registration Required = true
- Maximum Speed = 45
- Ebike Type = SPEED PEDELEC
